Mixed Greens 011: Unpretty
When the US Centers for Disease Control found unusually high levels of phthalates in women eight years ago, no one had any idea how ugly the beauty industry really was. In this edition of Mixed Greens, we speak with Stacy Malkan, whose book Not Just a Pretty Face recounts the formative years of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics -- and the unpretty truths they uncovered.
Mixed Greens is EWG's environmental health podcast. You can subscribe in iTunes or in a reader, or listen right here in your browser. Check out previous episodes for more Mixed Greens goodness!

Hi
I am using and promoting Optimal Skincare by Mannatech, which is fragrance and paraben free. It is produced using a new technology (www.tensawater.info and www.hydratedskin.com). I feel that this skincare range is a lot safer for people and the environment. Please check out these wonderful products on www.mannapages.com/lizmaria
How confident are you that companies are switching from toxic to less toxic? Is there enough information about the chemicals they're using as replacements? Also, I've noticed Skin Deep info. can be very dated ie. olive oil? I'd love to use Skin Deep as my most reliable source however I'm not sure it entirely is.
Thanks for your comments!
Shelly, Skin Deep is updated every three months -- which is VERY often, especially considering how big a project it is with our small staff.
And, since each product and ingredient has both a hazard score and a data gap score, you can see exactly how much we know about new ingredients as they're added. Useful, eh?
I started an internet business Organic Living For Life because I had gotten very ill with uterine fibroids. I was literally on deaths bed when it finally discharged using just essential oils. I have researched my products and have more I can recommend. especially the company that saved my life (since a hysterectomy was not an option for me). The Miessence products are wonderful. First and only company to have organic skin care and cosmetics! They are USDA certified and or ASO (Australian certified organic. They have just about everything. This is my passion now. None of my children or grandson use products from the store. Remember Health is wealth.
Do you advise of the safety of certain products if I give you a product name? Thank you.
sure or you can look it up on skin deep..
crissy
S. Olsen, Crissy's right -- We don't hand out specific advice, but if you look your product (or its ingredients) up on Skin Deep you'll get a hazard score for it along with information about health effects are associated with it.
Wonderful Podcast - I love Stacy Malkan's new book. I ordered five copies and gave them to my best friends and sisters.
All consumers need to let their voices be heard that we will not buy products from companies that deceive us and cause harm. Toxic chemicals which are carcinogenic or cause reproductive damage do not belong in our products and we as consumers should not promote these companies by purchasing their products.
I've been using and selling Miessence, which I find to be one of the best out there, but there are also other companies that I love - Terressentials Aubrey Organics, and Alaska Glacial Mud Company. When I have Miessence parties - I bring products with me from these other companies as well. My main goal is to let people know which companies have integrity and will back up the safety of their products by signing the Compact For Safe Cosmetics.
Also, want to mention that I love the Skin Deep database and I use it multiple times a day - it's the best resource out there and it's a great accomplishment for all who put it together and continue to keep it updated - thanks for all you do to keep us informed.
