Listen up: Kid-Safe Chemicals Act conference call for all
Here at EWG we talk about the Kid-Safe Chemicals Act a lot. Like every day. Sometimes all day. Why?
Simple. We think it's time for a new law (the Toxic Substances Control Act that currently regulates industrial chemicals is notoriously weak) and that Kid-Safe is the right approach to federal chemical policy. We also think it has a good chance of moving out of the proverbial station and becoming law. With your help.
And since you probably don't talk about it every day, or all day (like we do), we've scheduled an open conference call so you can hear for yourself how Kid-Safe works, why TSCA doesn't, and how you can help make Kid-Safe more than just a bill on Capitol Hill (remember School House Rock?).
Please join us. We'll be talking for an hour on Thursday, February 19th from 1 to 2 PM Eastern (10 to 11 am Pacific). Feel free to post your questions here up to and during the call, and we'll see that they get answered.
Call-in numbers: Dial 1-218-339-3600. Enter code: 1036416#
A big thanks to the folks over at Healthy Child, Healthy World for hosting this call and promoting Kid-Safe.
Talk to you soon!

Is there a "Kid-Safe" certification that companies can use on their products to inform parents that a product is safe for their kids? I would assume there has to be a certification process, so if there is can you provide some details on that as well?
Thanks,
Ken
Hi folks: As far as I understand this issue, the Kid Safe Act asks companies to generate toxicity information on quite a few chemicals in a very short period of time, and eventually all chemicals. I also know that the tests take a long time to conduct, and it takes EPA a long time to review the results. Aren’t we setting ourselves up to fail if we create unrealistic mandates like this?
Hi Lisa,
Just wanted to send you a quick thanks for letting me know about this call and for all the information you shared! It was great to get some of the nuances of the bill ironed out and be involved in some positive energy about making a difference.
I'm going to start out with a post to my blog about the call and then will stay in touch with you about future action as things progress.
Thanks so much for all you do!
Hope
Ken: No, there is not a certification process because if a chemical fails the safety standard, it will no longer be in products. Thanks for your question.
I'm so sorry I missed the call yesterday. Is there anyway that you archived it so I can listen to it later?
Thanks!
Cheryl, Healthy Child, Healthy World taped the call and will be making it available in the near future. As soon as we have a link, we will share it here in the comments and elsewhere. Sorry we missed you! If you're wondering how to get involved in passing Kid-Safe, a previous Enviroblog post lists some good ideas: http://tinyurl.com/9zdjvu. Thanks so much for your interest!
The call podcast is now available here: http://tinyurl.com/d8ch7r - scroll down to the call dated 2/19/09. Happy listening!
