Thank You For Buying Our Toxic Plastic
It's 1960. Embattled tobacco industry reps, accused by the Federal Trade Commission and health groups of hawking products that kill people, retreat to a sumptuous hideaway and devise a campaign to salvage cigarettes by, among other things, targeting women.
Soon after the confab at Miami's luxe hotel Fontainbleau, long, slender cigarettes appear, most prominently Virginia Slims, cultivating feminists with its "You've come a long way baby" pitch. The tobacco business comes roaring back, and by 1968, women account for 47 percent of the American market.
Though smoking rates have declined since the 1990s, when anti-smoking sentiment hit a tipping point in the U.S., surveys indicate as many teenage girls as boys smoke, and 18 percent of adult women still smoke.
Flash forward to last week. Embattled food and chemical industry reps, trying to head off a nationwide ban of the toxic plastic chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in cans, bottles and other food containers, huddle in a back room of Washington's exclusive Cosmos Club -- and decide to target women.
Their dilemma: over the past dozen years, BPA, a synthetic estrogen, has been found to disrupt the endocrine system, even in trace doses. Bills to ban the chemical from baby bottles and other children's food containers are before Congress, the Cailfornia legislature and other state and local lawmaking bodies. Recently, the baby bottle industry yielded to pressure from state officials and consumer groups and agreed to turn to non-BPA plastic.
The canning industry, in the bullseye because it coats the insides of virtually all food cans produced in the U.S. with BPA-rich epoxy lining (Eden Foods, the rare exception, uses non-BPA can linings except for tomatoes), is in no mood to compromise. The chemical industry, which rakes in an estimated $6 billion in global BPA sales annually, is downright hostile to the idea of limiting BPA to things you don't eat on, like cell phones, computer casings and washing machine paint.
The Cosmos klatch minutes, which give a new meaning to the word cynical, leaked in a heartbeat to the Washington Post, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Environmental Working Group. The conversation, it seems, comes straight out of Big Tobacco's playbook.
In a scene that could have been lifted from Thank You for Smoking, novelist Christopher Buckley's brilliant take on Washington lobbyists, an industry note-taker and emailer recounted:
Attendees believe a balance of legislative and grassroots outreach (to young mothers ages 21-35 and students) is imperative to the stability of their industry.
Presumably, the industry reps focused on women because they make family purchasing decisions and care about health. The notetaker added:
Their 'holy grail' spokesperson would be a "pregnant young mother who would be willing to speak around the country about the benefits of BPA."
I couldn't make this up. Even Chris Buckley couldn't make this up.
Imagine: top lobbyists, among them Kathleen M. Roberts of the canning industry's North American Metal Packaging Alliance, slip into the glittering Beaux Arts mansion that houses the formerly all-male Cosmos to concoct a media campaign that centers on a pliant pregnant pitchwoman.
But who? What young mother will agree to tout a product that dozens of scientific studies have shown causes permanent damage to an embryo?
Surely not anyone who has read even a bit of the evidence that BPA disrupts the development of the reproductive system and brain, that it may harm the cardiovascular system, cause cellular changes leading to breast and prostate cancer, trigger diabetes and obesity and impede the body's response to chemotherapy.
There's more. The notetaker wrote:
Attendees suggested using fear tactics (e.g. "Do you want to have access to baby food anymore?") as well as giving control back to consumers (e.g. you have a choice between the more expensive product that is frozen or fresh or foods packaged in cans) as ways to dissuade people from choosing BPA-free packaging.
What the notetaker didn't note was that there are alternatives to BPA. Japan abandoned BPA can linings back in 1998 because students and young adults were turning up with alarming blood levels of the toxic chemical.
Another tawdry moment: according to the email, the lobbyists decided that:
Focusing on the impact of BPA bans on minorities (Hispanic and African American) and poor is also important.
Translation, if this passage needs any: fear tactics work well on impoverished, historically exploited people who don't have time to read those dry scientific reports because they're working two or three jobs trying to hold their families together, and paying top dollar for medical care when their kids get really sick because they don't have health insurance.
EWG has posted the entire email at this link, so you can read it for yourself.
But for you young mothers and fathers who don't have time today, here are a few words you won't find: Safe. Healthy. Truth. Fact. Honesty. Candor. Integrity.
The tobacco industry didn't throw those words around either. That worked well, didn't it?
The prevalent use of this BPA epoxy lining in the U.S. is scary. If places like Japan found the levels too high for their people in 1998 then what is with the U.S.? Are Americans somehow more chemical resistant humans than the Japanese?
Wow. That's all I can say.
Great post! I had the exact same reaction when I read the meeting minutes that came up the hairbrained idea to find a pregnant spokesperson to espouse the benefits of BPA. People finally saw through the lies of the big tobacco companies and now they need to see through the claims of the chemical industry.
Thanks, Brenna. I covered the tobacco wars for Time Magazine and wrote how some ruthless companies tried to destroy the reputations of critics and whistleblowers. Their attacks backfired because Americans don't accept that kid of behavior. This incident involves some of the biggest names in the food and beverage business -- Coca Cola, Del Monte, Alcoa, Crown. How do you readers feel about them now? Elaine Shannon
Several governments are supposedly trying to decide how much BPA is safe to ingest!
As far as I am concerned they are wasting "our"
money and their time when the solution is so very simple ------- ban it completely.
Maybe then the number of children starting puberty early will stop or a least slow down, plus all the other problems they are trying to hide from the general public will also reduce.
Maybe it is time to start a class-action suit like they did with Tobacco??!!
I think that these chemical/food companies are in for a very rude awakening as more and more consumers are asking questions about packaging, as well as ingredients, and deciding what they will and will not accept. Sales of ORGANIC food are multiplying rapidly!!
If anyone still believes that these big corporations care about their consumers just remember that they had NO QUALMS about using BPA in baby bottles, etc.!!
Lord only knows what problems will surface in a few years as these babies grow up.
Next on my personal list is MSG (which is addictive and the food companies knew that when they first started using it many many years ago), and
insisting that any and all products that contain GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) be clearly labelled as containing such!!!!! A little tidbit of information about this --- the USDA has FORBIDDEN U.S. companies selling within the U.S. to label products as containing GMO.
Take care!!
This is a prime example of what campaign finance is all about. Lobbyist outnumber our representatives 22 to 1 in DC & our representatives after enjoying years of the same fine pay, health care, & retirement they claim teh auto industry broke itself with, become lobbyists!
www.nextrevolution.net
Cur representative's pay, eliminate health care & retirement we pay for, & retirement for all representatives already on our benefit plan & let them live on Social Security. Past misrepresentation is responsible for every problem we have, rewarding them for failure like banks, AIG, & Wall Street is rediculous.
They might fix the pronblems they created by robbing Social Security if their retirment is Social Security. They might also do something about health care costs driven out of sight through the promotion of illegal immgration due to the same campaign finance.
Our representatives & campaign contributors are passing our tax $ back & forth like bad notes in a bank. Contributors give our tax $ right back to our representatives after billions are handed out in things like the $300 billion farm bill & tax cuts.
Madoff was nothing compared to this two party contolled through campaign finance.
We are beiong taken in the greatest scam the world has ever see to the tune of trillions of $, we call it representation.
I cannot believe how the government, that is charged with protecting us from crap like this, is so willing to look the other way for a few bucks. Pathetic. And they wonder why no one votes and thinks the government is corrupt?? Just look at the food, pharmaceutical industries and the FDA. Hell, how many people had to die before our government decided to mandate seatbelts??
As a teacher, I know for a fact that some little girls in 3rd and 4th grade have already reached FULL puberty. I do believe that BPA is one of the culprits for early puberty, and blogs such as this need wide exposure, so I do intend to tell my friends to read it. I have 3 kids, and I try my hardest to keep them chemical free, but some things you can't see and don't know about, so we need more blogs like this one.
No, Americans are not more chemical resistant, but the corporate interests here are more greedy than their counterparts in Japan. If one stops to take a look at all the ills facing our society, it all boils down to greed trumping our well-being.
It sounds to me that they are no better than the tobacco companies. They know it is bad for us but want to blackmail us into using their products. I for one will not buy any of their products. I will only buy product that the containers are glass. Tell Coca-Cola and Del Monte: No BPA
Coca-Cola:
1-800-GET-COKE, ext. 2
Del Monte:
1-800-543-3090
This is the same corporate strategy that sells inherently dangerous products and tries to instill fear (which sells the best of all). It's used on everything from gmo's, fluoride, and vaccines, just to name the most obvious.
Put food and liquids in glass. Too much cancer causing products.
I called Del Monte and Coke and said NO PBA!!!
I told them that I am a woman who has had 2 ovarian tumors removed, 2 organs removed, 3 surgeries and almost died after my last surgery. What is it going to take for these companies to STOP using these toxic chemicals!!!
Del Monte asked me which products I was referring to.. I responded any packaging that has PBA including the lining in their cans! He said he would take note of my complaint. That they care about their quality and have been in business a long time and only use what is safe buy the FDA's standards. I explained that isn't good enough and that I refuse to by their products and will not stop at this phone call to create awareness.
Coke claims that they don't use PBA and that the plastic they use is PET. I responded that it is still plastic and made from petroleum. TOXIC.
Why don't they make a healthy drink without all of that nasty sugar? and pagkage it in glass! Even though it isn't cost effective for them it will be health effective for the consumer.
I didn't mention that do not use either companies products and that goes the same for personal care products or household cleaners that are loaded with chemicals. I created my own blog in which I try to create awareness about my own conscious choices I make.
http://consciouschoiceblog.blogspot.com
The FDA is good for nothing. They are not protecting anyone but only their pocket!
I am constantly commenting to these big companies to stop using chemicals to either package or preserve their products. I tell everyone I know as well.
I also tell them about you! Thank you EWG. at least someone cares about our well being.
Oh wow... that just makes my blood boil! I don't even want to finish my can of coke now.
And you know that the people fighting to keep BPA probably buy fresh organic foods and wouldn't go near canned food or drinks with BPA... Disgusting.
But way to go Japan!
This is a travesty! BPA should be banned altogether ~ Japan is way ahead of the U.S. on this one! Why indeed hasn't the U.S. taken a good look at this and banned it too?? Simple: Money!
I do a total-body nutritional cleanse a little each day to rid myself of many toxins ~ but if most of our canned/packaged food is laced with BPA . . .I guess that means I am just breaking even in the toxic fight! We have enough toxins in our air, our water and on our food - we don't need more in our packaging for crying out loud!
Why would these places do this to put posion in food containers? Is it cheaper to add something like this extra? Its like what do I eat or drink that is safe? Don't we have enough things to worry about now this. Whatever happened to the inspections for safe products? If everyone could just do their jobs. We might be safer.
This is the same corporate strategy that sells inherently dangerous products and tries to instill fear (which sells the best of all). It's used on everything from gmo's, fluoride, and vaccines, just to name the most obvious.
Take this and run with it: "BPA is American melamine."
great story....how do we get it on huffington post and other news webs?
Why do we continue to tolerate the existence of corporations that engage in sociopathic behavior? BPA manufacturers protect themselves at the expense of hundreds of millions of other people. As long as we accept the underlying assumption of our society - that exploitation is good - this type of behavior is likely continue.
I was opening my email as I also opened my can of caffeine-free diet Coke...Which I then nearly spit all over my computer screen as I choked on it. I dumped it down the sink and then did the same with the rest of the 12-pack and put the cans in the recycling bin. It will be the final Coke product to ever enter my house. Ironically, I had just came home from the surgeons office who has scheduled me for a lymph node biopsy next week. I started drinking the caffeine-free diet Coke when I found out I was pregnant with my now 6 year-old son; thinking it was just as healthy as water! My son has recently been diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome. (Previously he has been diagnosed with ADHD, OCD, ODD, and I was told it is possible Bi-Polar Disorder is among his conditions, although that is not expected to truly manifest itself until he is a teen.) Could BPA be to blame? And it could have been prevented clear back in 1998?!
I called COCA COLA and the person who answered read to me from an obviously prepared statement that products all over the world have trace elements of BPA and their cans have a protective lining, etc.
I told her flatly I didn't believe that and she was obviously reading from a prepared statement. I said emphatically that unless Coca Cola followed the example of Japan to eliminate BPA from its products, I and my friends/family would boycott their products.
Dear Charles, thanks for paying attention to this issue. If food processors and chemicals and plastics makers had a good factual argument for their products, we could have an interesting debate. But scheming to plant disinformation -- that no BPA equals no baby food -- is beyond cynical -- and the whole episode illustrates the hollowness of the industry's rhetoric better than any charges environmentalists could make. Elaine Shannon
Corporate lobbyist should not be allowed to over-ride health and safety issues and the FDA needs to start doing their job. Its just crazy that this is up for debate in the US. Over and over we see this happening, GMO debates, smoking debates, organic laws, MSG, Saccharin and other food additives, now BPA. Consumers need to be educated right now more than ever to keep our families safe from all the corporate greed at the cost of our health.
I am English but live in Canada now. I am interested in finding out about all these things.
I am 56 and like many of my generation am suffering from various ailments caused by environmental problems and food processing.
Things like heart disease, pre-diabetic, Fibromyalgia, MS, Chronic fatigue syndrome, Liver problems, lung problems. I am affected in many ways.
I no longer use manufactured foods, am Vegan and try to be as organic as possible. I feel healthier for this.
I have forwarded the link to this article to all my friends and to the groups in a women's site that I run.
I'll tell you whY: UNREGULATED CAPITALISM
Seems the only way to wake folks up around all this is to, not call fault on the company, but to NAME NAMES. Meaning that, people can hide behind corporate veils, but they can not hide behind their own names when publicly announced. Whether accused rightly or wrongly, we humans will stand up to either offend or defend our personal actions.
So, it's time to write articles like this and NAME THE INDIVIDUALS who are presenting the cases. Have links to their bios, etc.
MAKE IT PERSONAL.

Why should these companies stop using BPA - it helps contribute to keeping the doctors and hospitals making money and especially the drug companies. They all work hand in hand. If one link in the chain changes for the better it will effect another link - someone is going to loose and they rather it be us.
Shame on the U.S. for allowing this to happen. Just becuase they make these cheap, toxic products doesn't mean we have to use them. All the talking, writing and calling these companies asking them to stop using BPA is not going to do a darn thing. They are making way to much money selling these products. As long as there is supply and demand - they will continue polluting the earth and those who live on it.
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THERE IS A LIST OR WE CAN GET ONE THAT TELLS US WHAT PRODUCTS OR CLASSES OF PRODUCTS USE BPA SO WE CAN AVOID IT? MAYBE ITS HIDDEN IN OTHER PACKAGING THAN CANNED FOODS AND POP CANS, THANKS
What a National Disgrace!
When will the profits before the health of our people end!
Please list all the products currently on our supermarket shelves that contain BPA.. so we can ALL boycott them ALL.
Then maybe, our voices can be heard.
Thank you!
I doubt that it is that Americans could ever be "resistant" to the chemical. It is more likely that Americans have never been tested for these types of chemicals. How many health studies have been done in the United States at all? Any comprehensive studies by anyone? Answer: very few. The reason: health studies are expensive and need funding to happen- mostly private funding too because our government doesn't fund much research. And furthermore, "testing" in general is funded by those who want to control the outcome. Therefore, American Chemical corporations or their partners would suppress any funding for such studies.
I will say that from the very few studies conducted we know that Americans are full of chemicals- and so are our animals, fish and farm workers.
Want to make a difference: find funding sources for independent toxicology testing and studies on Americans and the chemicals they eat, drink, sleep, work and play in.
I suppose we can be thankful that the poor mis-informed pregnant woman will have a limited period of "usefulness" to these wretched lobbyists! Presumably needing to be visibly pregnant she will only have a "window" of some 3 months in which to travel around the country carrying the wrong message!
Or will she be like the tragic pregnant mares abused by Wyeth in their manufacture of Premarin (HRT), repeatedly impregnated throughout their miserable lives?
No, wait, there could be a legion of pregnant clones ready to carry the message rather like "Stepford wives".
Thank you EWG for this site!
I live in the UK where I work in a natural and organic skincare business and we now use this site for reference.
Wish you were reviewing our products but I guess they need to be on sale in the US before you do that?
BPA is only the tip of the iceberg, but it's a good start. Let's face it, we have phthalates, heavy metals (in dyes), CMR(carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic) substances in many consumer products, potentially harmful chemicals in cosmetics, inadequately tested nanomaterials, etc. It is a long and difficult journey to achieve a healthier environment, now that all those substances have invaded our lives. It is not easy to replace them, and the replacements may turn out to be even more harmful. Good luck in your (and everybody's) work against the chemicalization of our world.
Does anyone know how you can get tested to see what your BPA level might be in your blood?
I fear for all people who are unaware of what people in charge of things like this are doing.
The average population, (through my own surveying, and research) does not know about things like this, nor would they ever suddenly start researching it.
Our society is geared to keep the general population ignorant. It has always been that way.
I've told countless associates of mine, to STOP REUSING WATER BOTTLES! I can't count anymore how many people I've encountered doing this. It's actually a mindless act, to refill a water bottle. It is not safe!
This is all about money, and preying on consumer ignorance. Profit margins dictate they keep quiet, if they want that big fat profit, and bonus at the end of the year. There is absolutely no consideration for the people, or our well being.
Our entire Patriarch Society is a complete farce, and the people have been fooled...Just so some tyrant can fatten his bank account. this country is run by tyrants, and if you're expecting them to come clean....well don't hold your breath.
A good guide to health is this: Stick with the Earth...Mother Nature. ORGANIC...v. Man Made. Do not patronize companies who have been found to be poisoning people! Make your Own Rules for your family to eat only what grows from the Earth, and phase out Big Industry from your lives!
Freeganism is taking off like wild fire...google it to investigate. More and more people are detaching from traditional society...Why? Because they have been found to be completely fraudulent.
Did people forget that "THEY" decide how things go? It's up to us to stop patronizing these tyrants, and protect ourselves, and our children from the injurious ingredients they have tainted all our products with.
Take a stand today, and get with the real program...the program for the people!
As far as I'm concerned we have them in "Check". We can move to "Check Mate" them, if we join together and stop accepting this garbage way of living! We work too hard, to accept this crap!
On a mission to correct the planet, and protect it's people!
It's the "People" v. the "Culprits"... which side will you choose?
Truly, I feel for those who have had tumors and growths and children who weren't perfect. However, we all grew up using the same products and the majority of us are fine. In fact, without the luxury of being able to spout percentages and scientific studies, I'd be willing to say that, as a whole, we are safer and more disease-free since these products were introduced as substitutes for products that had far worse impacts on users and/or their environment.
Keep up the good work. We need to go forward with this type of issue.
I don’t understand these companies. Before having meetings to defend BPA, have any of them even bothered to find out if it is even necessary to have plastic packaging made with a synthetic estrogen? Since there are baby products already available touting how they are BPA free, obviously BPA may not even needed in the packaging of many products. I mean what would happen if BPA was removed? If the shelf life of my canned food decreased from 5 years down to a year I doubt if I would care or be even marginally affected. Who wants to eat food that old? Before spending all this effort protecting BPA why don’t these companies examine the necessity of it being used in their product or packaging first. BPA is probably being unnecessarily overused in products with no benefit or cost effectiveness to a majority of the products. No one at this meeting even questioned why they should be proactive in prolonging the life of BPA?! They just automatically made up their minds that they’re not going to change their ways even if making a BPA free product were more cost effective and safer products. What a bunch of morons!! If this is the way these companies react to market changes like newly emerged information I suggest their shareholders sell their stocks because these companies don’t know how to adapt to survive or be competitive.
Hi Richard (EWG), Elaine.
I receive your newsletter and admire your work at EWG, but I cannot sign most of your petitions because I live in Brazil. About Coca Cola and other big companies, when in USA you finally get prohibitions for the use of some aditives etc, here in my country, they increase this use. An example is Sodium Cyclamate, prohibited by FDA, and widely used in Brasil: Coca Cola Zero and many other products use it.
I hope you continue your good job and have more and more strenght and success in it.
Does anyone know where Coke is using these products. My husband still drinks diet coke in cans. I cut a can and don't see a white lining. Also, I recently bought pineapple in a can which I think was delmonte, and the can was unlined. I am not by any means defending these companies awful behavior and appreciate this information so I can ensure I don't support them, but I am curious where these products are used by these companies, especially coke.
Posted all over my blog, Facebook, Twitter and various other networks - it is SICK how these corporate companies conspire and believe their own lies that these chemicals aren't really a big problem.
Tides will change and already are beginning to. We may never have a completely chemical-free environment but as long as we try to go as chemical free as we can for us & our children -we will make a difference.
I had my store line @ a market last night and had so many children coming by and asking questions and getting into discussions about chemicals & health - they were ages 8-12. The children today are SMART and think for themselves....they will make wise decisions when the info is made available to them and they will be the generation that will not accept shady practices - corporate companies will eventually see that when their #'s decline and sales go to more responsible competitors.
I think of myself as a healthy consumer. I try not to eat too much processed foods, make things from scratch, buy fresh fuits and veggies that are organic, and rarely if ever drink a soda from a can. You get the picture of my valiant efforts. But like many, I have bought a can of soup, chili etc. when I am on the run. I have had a history of severe endometriosis and ovarian cysts which made it almost impossible for me to become pregnant. I have epilepsy which started at 34 which some medical experts believe was brought on by major hormonal changes. Is this a result of the toxins that are out there? These companies sicken me literally. If all these CEO's and company execs can think of is profits and the bottom line, they are barbarians. Japan is obviously ahead of the game..........
Wow it's appalling that so many in this country will flat out lie with the intention to cause harm to make a buck.
Why is the U.S. still using BPA when Japan isn't?
Easy. It's called GREED. That's the end result of capitalism run amok because the wealthy run the government.
When the wealthy run the government (and we see this especially when Republicans are "in power") we see laissez-faire legislation and non-regulation.
The fox has never been sufficient to guard the hen house.
Why on God's green earth should ANYONE expect the wealthy, particularly wealthy business owners and board members, to regulate their income? They could care less about the people they hurt. After all, how many wealthy people do you think actually eat food out of a can?
The answer is to somehow boycott canned food and all food/beverage products that use BPA. That would force wealthy business owners to do something.
But alas, the average American has become a soft, stupid blob that does little more than plop on their arses and watch Fox news. Because it's easy.
What do you think people did before canned food? Or jars of baby food? People used to have gardens and shop at farmer's markets and food coops.
Of course, that was before the very wealthy bought up all the farmland.
We need to get back to basics in this country. We need to get back to self-sufficiency, both as individuals and as a country. The less dependent we are on other people, businesses, and countries, THE BETTER OFF WE'D ALL BE.
After all, the ONLY people that would suffer would be the filthy rich, the obscenely wealthy. Perhaps it's time they got their comeuppance.
Bring on another 1929! I'd like to see a few rich people get their just deserts.
Sadly my mother passed away about 4 1/2 years ago. She drank Coke every day. Many years ago she found she could not handle aluminum. She had all of her porcelin teeth ground down because there was aluminum in them and they turned her gums gray. She could not wear costume jewelry. She used aliminum-free deodorant. (Not easy to find a few years ago.) She could not drink out of pop cans. She said there was a bad taste from Coke in plastic bottles. A lot of people disagreed with her. She had the grocer special order Coke in glass bottles for her. Now this all comes out. She knew exactly what was going on. We're still not sure what caused her death. She taught tap, jazz, & ballet her entire life. She taught arobics twice a day for a few years. She was active and in good shape. As I look back, was it toxins from the way we live in this society? I miss my mom.
I agree with most about the issues here. If they are recycled where does that bad plastic go?
-There are some good uses for the personal size use one time water bottles-First I wash and rinse out, take off the label so I know not to drink out of the bottle, then fill with tap water and leave about two inches empty, then put in the freezer to use for ice pack when it is real hot. Good idea to label them NOT FOR DRINKING.
-when I buy canned food I like the option to choose glass jars or get fresh or look for card-board type frozen food. I didn't know that they lined the cans with plastic except for chili, like Hormel Chili. So I am trying not to buy any canned in metal-food from now on! Aluminum is also bad because of the fluoride compounds in it which deteriorates your body at high rate. Infants are at even greater risk. To learn more about fluoride go to: http://www.fluoridealert.org/
Why can't they use glass jars with safe lids for those who want them? They could be promoted as healthy alternatives to that plastic, which by the way is also bad if you microwave your food in any plastic containers.
I just read your column and I am mortified that this is going on. I don't get too much time to read your Blog & what have I been missing?! BPA, Coke & Del Monte...Shame on YOU All!!!
Money in the Bank, while comsumers suffer the consequence.
Calling the companies is a good idea, but they are unlikely to do anything different unless their sales begin to drop, and unfortunately because of the apathy of the people and their addiction to Coca Cola, that is unlikely to happen.
I would like to suggest something different and that is to call your senator or representative and voice your opinion, and ask them to do something about this in the form of legislation. People don't realize that a call to a senator represents the views of around 1100 people in their district, and they take these calls seriously. It is the apathy of the people in each state to not make their wishes known, and to hold the ones they elected to office accountable, that causes things to fall by the wayside. We, the people have more power than is realized, and by storming Congress and the House of Representatives with phone calls and letters, a lot of things could be accomplished, but no one seems to want to take the time to do this, and that allows the government to continue to get away with this type of thing. When are we going to WAKE UP!
Is BPA in the lining for lids? Such as those used in homemade canning? Snapple drinks? Sobe drinks?
Is there any way out of BPA in regards to buying food that isn't fresh?
Can anyone answer?
Sure let's all go back to organic now that we've destroyed the livelihood of our farmers. Remember "Farm Aid"?? and what about our need for so much technology. Now we can't live or run our lives on a daily basis without some if not all of it. Lets allow Gay marriages too, since their only hope is to become like the rest of the story book life buy a home have kids then lose it to banks backed by our governments. Seems to me no matter what we do we are damned. now we get what we all want right? processed food in cans coated and tainted with BPA. farmland turned into Condo, Condo's turned into hoods. were in a jobless drug induced society of capitalistic whiners of neputism. So while we all sit here and wait for our planet to subdue to melting icebergs why don't we pick on and pick off (have it your way) the very companies we allowed to become the conglomarate's they are. Do I sound cynical and mad. That's because I am. VERY MAD and tired of the dissillusions of what the USA has become. GET off your ass. go ahead print this. Oh yes, right I can now do that myself on the WEB!!!
This is a great article! Really Scary. I have this article linked onto my site www.thebuzzonlife.com so others can read it too!
Thanks to all who are commenting and posting. The American Chemistry Council has a big (close to $300 million, at last report) budget for representing the chemicial and plastics industry. The food industry has as deep a pocket, or deeper. Despite all this, consumer resistance to BPA-based plastics is increasing because of people like you.
It is a darned shame that greed and a strong desire to maximize profit margin at all costs have taken over the world. It seems I am aways hearing about some new toxic chemical found in the food I eat or the milk or water I drink.
Sometimes the old ways of doing things were better. Why is it that in this age of recycling, the plastic industry has managed to convince everyone that recycling plastic is better. Beverages used to be packaged in glass containers. When soda was sold in 16 oz glass containers there was a deposit, the containers were returned to the bottling company, steam cleaned/sanitized and then reused. This is recycling, not using plastic which is then turned into what... We only need so many plastic park benches which will last 300 years. Glass was a much better alternative and it was used for milk, juices, soda, just about everything when I was growing up.
End of rant.

You should be ashame of your selves
Big brother Pharmacy and its other big businesses like FDA and FTC let things slide through that are not healthy for you . And evren God is very sad .
He created the earth to be inhabited with animals ,humans to be happy with each other and he filled the earth with abundant food water sources for all free from chemicals, pesticides, herbicides!!!!!
The command only to eat of animals were only given after he saved Noah and his family of 8 from the flood.
The animals however were to be properly bled as their blood was sacred to God and it was evidently also later proven to be a protection to man from any diseases. AS even scientists note that it is also even for us today.
So it doesn't make sence to pump hormones and over prescribe antibiotics then feed dead animals to cows ans pigs and other animals in which later comes down with mad cow disease.
Now wonder the prophecy of the earth to vomit it self of all polution is coming true.
Look at it logically Deforestation, all the cutting down of the trees which give us oxygen to breathe especially from the Rain Forest and of the land garbage over load from man inventions and even our ground water souce supply of the oceans ,rivers ,lakes and streams and even springs and the rain that comes down from the mountains in the form of acid rain from all of the polution that has effected our air supply "The ozone tear" which protects our earth from metors and meterorites. And the perfect balance that our creator provide for us of the beauty that surrounds us . The breath taking scents of the wild flowers and herbs and who can not resists the sweet scent of roses and begonias as even the beauty of the bulb ranuchlus the dessert rose how it captures someones heart in many colors of all flowers and trees in bloom from spring to fall then even winter snows and how God supplies all things throughout the seasons .

Stacey,
You are oh so right about the FDA..It seems like we some how get people to respond and shoot the Truth at the FDA. It helps kill our people with its okay of perscription drugs and lax ability all for, it seems the almighty $$$$$$$$$.
Thanks for your comment, Stacey, I would love to move thier $$$$$$ and empty honor to where it all belongs...PROTECT THE PEOPLE.While their pockets buldge, the American people suffer. It is shocking that our government does nothing......oops...I forgot fot a moment, the government has the same buldging pockets in helping themselves and the Lobbiests to get the job done to squelch the American voice.
It's scarey to think that something as harmful as BPA is in something as common as coke cans. I'm lucky that I don't like soda.
What on Earth could possibly be good about BPA??! If this is their goal, to tout the good things about BPA, then I hope they are planning to say that it makes them extensive amounts of money, because there really is no good "things" about it!!!
People should also be concerned about NANOTECH in the linings of cans, cartons, packaging, plastics, printer ink, etc., as it causes MORGELLONS DISEASE, which is a SCI-FI HORROR, HIGHLY INFECTIOUS, and devastating to health, family, and finances.
You thought diet Coke was safe????? What about Aspartame, phosphoric acid, artificial coloring, high fructose corn syrup....hello!....BPA is just one more chemical in an already chemical filled product.
nice discussion. got a lot of info. what kind of feeding bottles for my 10 mos. old are safe?
