CNN's Sanjay Gupta, MD on federal chemicals policy
EWG has long known the Toxic Substances Control Act (aka "TSCA") needs to be overhauled. Most Enviroblog readers likely do, too - because we talk about it a lot.
But the notion that the nation's federal chemicals policy is toothless and ineffective isn't likely dinner table talk across America - yet.
Thanks to Dr. Sanjay Gupta's discussion of the problem on CNN earlier this week, it might be soon. Watch this 4-minute segment to get the basics on why TSCA should be reformed - now:
If 4 minutes isn't enough for you, be sure to catch Dr. Gupta's hour-long special on the subject, Toxic Town USA. It debuts on CNN April 24th (Earth Day) @ 8 PM eastern.
Thank you, Dr.Gupta, for bringing attention to this issue. Environmental chemicals in our food, bedding, clothing & furniture have been linked to immune dysfunction, to ADD and other neurological dysfunction,to depression, to diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, cancer, fertility problems, early breast development and early sexual maturation. All these problems that have become epidemic in the US have in one study or another been linked to these environmental chemicals and in many cases the linkages overlap. For example both pthalates and brominated fire-retardents have been linked to ADD. BPA has been linked to neurological problems but I don't know specifically about ADD & BPA. But as far as I know, no one has studied the combined effect of these 3 chemicals on ADD/ADHD. It becomes a very complicated issue to sort out. I strongly suspect that exposure to BPA, pthalates, BDPE and PFOA alone is costing us billions and billions of dollars in health care costs.
I'm so glad to see this on CNN.
It gives me hope!
Important information. Glad Dr Gupta will bring it to the country.
If you would like more information, Ava Anderson, has a fantastic website, with excellent information on this very issue. Check out her toxic page, you will be shocked. Hers is the very first product in the country, if not the world, where every single ingredient in every product is a "0" on the EWG cosmeticsdatabase.com. No need to slather toxic chemicals on our skin, that get to our bloodstream.
Did you know that the average baby born in 2004(EWG, Red Cross) tested for 287 chemicals in their cord blood.
Did you know that Europe bans 1,324 toxic chemicals in their personal care products, and the US bans only 9? .... and that US companies have to clean up their products for export, but keep the toxins in for us, and our babies?!
Did you know that manufacturers can legally hide 600 toxic chemicals in the word "fragrance/parfum",
and that the EWG tested products with the word "frgarance" on the label and found that 83% had hidden phthalates, and not one label had them listed. Looking at labels is not enough. If your product has the word "fragrance" on the lavbel, throw it out.
Did you know that the average woman is exposed to 200+ toxic chemicals before she leaves the house?
Go to Ava's FB page to see the links to the articles about how dangerous phthalates are... linked to cancer, autism, ADHD, and a host of other endocrine dusrupting maladies.

PLease go to the database to see the 0-10 toxic score and disease imlplications of your products. Keep in mind the body burden of repeated exposures and a lifetime of use of these chemical laden products.

Enjoyed the piece, but would like to see more emphasis on the fact that of the over 84,000 chemicals being used commercially in this country, more than 20% are LEGALLY held secret in name and content from consumers. Washington Post did a god story on the subject a while back as well (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/03/AR2010010302110.html).
M Britt, Good point. EWG brought this to light back in late December: http://www.ewg.org/chemicalindustryexposed/topsecretchemicals. It has been getting a good bit of attention since then as a practice that needs to be fixed. Perhaps Dr. Gupta's Earth Day special on the subject of chemicals will touch on this.
Thanks for posting this video. I just wanted to comment on one of the example chemicals featured, TCE.
Cal/EPA's Prop 65 No Significant Risk Level (NSRL) for inhalation exposure to TCE is 80ug/day. This means that breathing 80ug/day will result in "only" one excess case of cancer in 100,000 individuals exposed over a 70-year lifetime.
If we apply this 80ug/day NSRL level to a workplace setting (meaning we use accepted assumptions about how much air a worker breathes per day, the length of an average working lifetime, the % of the chemical absorbed), we get, in essence, a NSRL level for the work environment, which is equivalent to an 8-hour TWA of 0.007ppm or 0.039mg/m3 (I didn't copy the math here, because this would be a much longer post, but I can if you'd like).
The permissible exposure limit (PEL) under Cal/OSHA is 25 ppm or 135mg/m3! 0.007ppm is the limit based on the Cal/EPA number. 0.007ppm would result in 1 excess cancer per 100,000 people. Think about excess cancers resulting from a 25ppm limit.
It's not right. We need a chemicals policy overhaul in this country, one that will force agencies like Cal/OSHA to play catch up and stop allowing workplace exposures at levels that are illegal on the sidewalk outside of that workplace.
Thank you, Dr.Gupta,
i'm waching in Hiati and i like a lot your emission. specially about the toxic town in USA. and the story of the baby haitian lost after the earthquake found. so i will continue to watch your emission. Haiti loves you.
and can't wait to see you one day.
Dear Dr Gupta,
We live in a small town in Florida. Throughout our town there are many ill people with unexplained rashes, brain fog, strange filiaments coming out of their skin and it is terrifying to us that the Doctors are calling them delusional and perscribing Qwell and Lindane for scabies as well as lice. This is not scabies as we have seen this scourge rot the face off of a woman, scabies does not occur on the face.
These dangerous products drive these manifestations deeper into the skin.
It has come to our attention that that there is a huge link to chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, and multiple dangerous food sources(Particularly Monsantos GMO rounup)
We have contacted the CDC and Health Departments with reports to no avail.
My wife has spoken to hundreds all over the country describing the same symptoms and has seen well over 300 people personally. We have samples and slides that she has obtained.
With detoxification we have seen some good results and my wife has been a very vocal advocate for these sufferers.
This is Hypertoxity at it's peak. If you wish to know more on this subject please email us back.
You would be one of the few that will listen, the list is getting longer and since being interviewed in various Media over the past 5 years she has recieved thousands upon thousands of emails from people with this.
They are frantic, scared, isolated and so very alone, this needs to be on National Television and not swept under a rug. We have lost a few to suicide due to the treatment of these sufferers and we do not want any more to die at their own hands.
It is the next HIV-AIDs but these people are being ignored and told to just live with it. We did not post our names due to the politics in this mess but we surely need to get the word out to the world. The only country not reporting Iceland.
Please feel free to email us back and we can give you verifible proof that this is real.
We are just two small voices in a sea of human beings with this We have gut wrenching photos of people with this and they were called delusion.
