More organophosphates please, Mom!
People may know that organic produce is a better bet - for our heath and the environment, yet only about 2% of U.S. food sales are organic. Yes, a paltry 2 percent.
Since pesticides are (literally) designed to kill, and eating fruits and veggies with residues is one way we're all exposed, it makes good sense to eat organic whenever possible and, when it's not, to use EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides, which tells you which fruits and veggies have the most (the dirty dozen) and the least (the clean 15) pesticide residues.
In this 4-minute clip from The Today Show, MSNBC's chief medical editor, Dr. Nancy Snyderman, explains a recent study in the journal Pediatrics linking kids' pesticide exposures to behavioral problems:

I am grateful for your food alert - however, I must comment on some - the label "organic, or natural" means absolutely nothing.
Consumers who want to purchase "healthy foods", the label they have to look for is: CERTIFIED ORGANIC! There are government regulations attached to that. (Are they enforced - that is another question I can't answer. It is the same with FDA approvals. (Who's watching the fox while he is watching the hen-house?)
Secondly: buying local..good start, but again - it HAS NO MEANING, other than supporting local growers who may very well (or most likely-)SPRAY WITH PESTICIDES.
It takes a lot more care - AND TIME to NOT spray.
I live at the border of the Dutch country, and know many small growers, but the only way i found to get healthy foods which are not..sprayed with pesticides, is to know my growers personally and buy from their family garden (same stuff they eat themselves) or grow my own.
The Amish or Mennonites do spray their own gardens, but use a mixture of water with Blackstrap Molasses, and almost unknown way of fighting with insects for your foods (insects have more time than we do - for eating)
I always tell everyone - if insects don't want it - it's bad for you.
I am attempting to put together a national directory of small growers who commit themselves to be pesticide free. These will only be accepted through recommendation, like an honor system. This directory will be free.
I'm an unemployed loan officer, and this is my "labor of love" - Why? Because I have not one single healthy person around me - any ages, and I find it horrifying that there is this new "healthy" such as: "I'm healthy, I just need to take xyz". Every second ad on television - is drugs (OTC's included). It is alarming, that even our respected Professionals lack knowledge of what's really happening on the ground floor, and it is not their fault - it is this country's best kept secret. We as a population have completely lost touch AND control over what and who ..feeds us and with what. The only way to regain that control is education and information.
I started my small blog less than a month ago and use it and social networks to educate the ones who welcome it. I research, research. research - and I talk to small growers. People ARE hungry for information!
So many novel chemicals have been introduced into our lives without any disclosure or understanding of the downside. With all the disorders and illnesses on the rise, it seems obvious that environmental changes must be the culprit. Humans were not designed to deal with this stuff. I wonder how many more things like this we will be discovering in the coming years.
I'm truly stunned by that low figure for the purchase of organic foods. And I am deeply concerned about the rise in childhood illness. Thanks for all the information you provide to try to help us avert this disaster in the making.
So, I'm wondering if the Calgon C-9(zinc ortho-phosphate)they put in our water, to coat the water pipe, to prevent lead from leaching is in this same phosphate catagory. If anyone knows I've been leary of this stuff from the start.
Is there a difference in pesticides from other countries? Atleast in the USA the pesticides are controlled. What about the amounts of pesticides in grapes from Chile or blackberries from Mexico? Does the Federal Government check the levels in these products? Just haven't been able to find this information anywhere. Thanks.
